Bridal Headpieces, Veils & Earrings: Advice from the Maker
How do I keep a hair comb secure?
This is the best advice to secure your wedding headpieces in your hair on your wedding day from makers of wedding accessories for over 30 years. We often use a clip fitting as well as comb fittings on our smaller pieces. Clip fittings are fast to put on and they are more secure than a comb much of the time. You always need to use some hair pins as well as a clip fitting on the day. Your hairdresser is usually the best person to do this but if you do it yourself clip the piece in place and use at least one additional hair pin (bobby pin) to lock it securely in your hair.
If you use a comb fitting we recommend you use at least two additional hair pins to secure the comb. Most quality headpieces use metal combs and they easily fall out. For a larger headpiece such as a crown or tiara you might need 3 or 4 or more extra hair pins to keep a tiara or crown in place. For A Bridal vine its best to use vines with no combs or clips. The best ones have a loop of metal wire at each end. Secure each end with a hair pin (bobby pin). In the middle of the vine you can use as many extra hair pins as you need to hold it in place. Placed correctly they are invisible of course.
Remember that the biggest threat to a quality hairpiece or crown, vine or tiara is something that no one talks about. AI will not mention it. The worst thing to spoil the lovely crystals or parts of a headpiece is hairspray. It ruins the sparkle of quality crystal on the headpiece. It makes it dull like glass and its very hard to remove. The best hairdressers know that a hairstyle has to be finished and sprayed before the finishing touches are added like the hairpieces, crowns, vines and combs. Also beware of hairspray on your earrings as it will spoil the sparkle of the best quality stones. If you have to add extra hairspray use your hands or something to shield any jewellery from hairspray.
How can I remove my veil without disturbing my headpiece?
How you place your veil is the answer to not disturbing your headpiece. We have been making veils for 30 years plus and you just need to give thought to where you place the comb of the veil in your hair. If you are wearing a crown or tiara its best to put the Tiara on first and get all the hairpins in place to get it secure before the put on the veil. The comb for the veil can be just behind the crown and you always have to use a couple of hairpins to secure it in place too. Quality plastic combs grip better than metal combs usually. Metal combs easily fall out so you need extra pins to hold the comb in place. If you add your veil last after the jewellery then after the ceremony its much easier to take it off and leave nothing disturbed. If you are wearing just a smaller one tier veil is a good idea to have it placed right at the back of your head. You can put the veil over your face as you walk down the aisle - then when you are ready put it back and its out of the way completely.
How do I choose longer earrings for comfortable wear?
The choice of good earrings has a few important aspects to consider. If you are choosing longer earrings how heavy are they. If you want a comfortable occasion then they need to be light. Are the fittings that hold the earrings on secure. If they are loose and you are wearing a normal post fitting earring then a heavy long earring is a lot more likely to fall off. The best fittings for earrings for longer earrings are the ones with a clear plastic ring. This extra width at the back of the ear makes it sit so much better. Long heavier earrings can pull your small earlobe out of shape very easily and the stone thats usually on the end of the earpost can end up pointing down. If you use a scroll or earring fitting with a wider backing it often stops this problem and the earrings will look much better on your ears.
